AI Agent Cost: What You Pay to Build and Run One
AI agent cost has two parts: what you pay to build the agent, and what you pay every month to run it. Most budgets focus on the first. The second is the one that keeps growing, because it rises with usage.
A single price wouldn't be honest, because "AI agent" covers everything from a subscription tool to a custom system connected to your core software. What you can do is understand the drivers and get a quote you can compare.
Your three options
Subscribe to a ready-made agent. This is the cheapest way to start and the fastest to test. You pay a monthly or per-use fee, and you accept the vendor's limits on what the agent can do and how it connects to your systems.
Assemble it on a platform. A no-code or low-code builder reduces engineering time. You still pay for the platform and model usage, and someone on your team has to own the result.
Build a custom agent. This has the highest upfront cost. It makes sense when the agent must work deeply with your own systems, follow your own rules or handle sensitive data.
What drives the build cost
- Integrations. Each system the agent reads from or writes to adds work, especially older software without good APIs. This is often the largest item.
- Actions. An agent that only drafts is far simpler than one that can change records or move money, because actions need permissions, limits and approvals.
- Data preparation. Scattered or outdated documents need cleaning before an agent can rely on them.
- Testing. Agents don't behave identically on every run, so you need a set of test cases built from real work.
- Compliance. Audit logs and data handling rules add work in regulated industries.
What drives the monthly cost
- Model usage. You usually pay for the text sent to and returned by the model. Long documents and repeated retries raise this quickly.
- Hosting and tools. Servers, databases, search and monitoring all have their own bills.
- Maintenance. Models change, connected software changes and prompts need updating.
- People. Someone has to review escalations and check quality.
Estimate cost per completed task
Monthly totals hide the number that matters. Use this instead:
Cost per completed task = (model + hosting + maintenance + review time) ÷ tasks completed correctly
Here is an illustrative example, not a benchmark. If all those costs come to $2,000 a month and the agent completes 4,000 tasks correctly, each one costs $0.50. Compare that with what the same task costs today.
Count only tasks completed correctly. An agent that runs cheaply but needs its work redone isn't cheap.
What to ask for in a quote
- Which integrations and actions are included?
- Who pays model and hosting fees, and how are they estimated?
- What limits stop a runaway task from running up a bill?
- How will quality be tested, and what result counts as finished?
- What does maintenance cost after launch?
A vendor who can't answer these hasn't scoped the work yet.
